Many support functions for Asterisk IP PBX systems can be carried out remotely, such as backing up configurations files and carrying out system upgrades. However, support for voice quality is one of the key aspects of IP PBX support and generally requires someone onsite to locate/rectify any issues.
Voice quality issues may be caused amongst other things by issues on the local LAN (e.g. an incorrectly configured switch), issues with the WAN (e.g. SIP/IAX2 provider connectivity issue, fault on an ISDN line), and also by incorrectly configured IP PBX equipment. It is possible to setup a remote IAX2/SIP extension over the Internet, but this will not provide the same voice quality experience as a user connected to the local LAN. As such, we recommend that where possible customers use the IP PBX installation/support services of a local provider to solve voice quality issues and to benefit from lower call out charges.
